Interior I, 2009

“Interior I” is the first piece in the Interior series. This set of sound installations is characterized by making use of sound spatialization and darkness in order to intensify the listener's psychoacoustic and social experience.

The sound piece is made up of various audios from recordings made by the inmates of a Mexican jail.  They were personally recorded by each of the volunteer inmates with various portable audio cassette recorders simultaneously introduced to the prison. They were offered the tape recorders for 15 days during which they were invited to record whatever they wanted anonymously, freely and without restriction of content or time. The result is a collage made up of sound fragments that range from personal confessions and interviews with each other, to music and rap.

The final installation consists of a 12-meter-long darkened tunnel with a six-channel audio broadcast inside.

The pieces in this series have been presented at Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, MUAC, UNAM and Centro Cultural de España en México.
