L’age d’or

L’age d’or, 2020

Musical intervention to Luis Buñuel’s film L‘ âge d’or (1930) offering a fresh reading through a completely new soundtrack and a bold sound. The film’s original score was conceived to have a protagonist role so that its function in the audiovisual dimension is not confined to the image’s narrative support.

For this piece, the music was made from improvisations against image using different electronic tools. The composition’s point of departure was the Surrealist universe and the delirious narrative of the script, as well as the symbolic dimension of the main plot: crazy and impossible love. In the original score, the theme is resolved through constant reiterations of passages form Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, while in this intervention it manifests by way of textural arborescence from the main motive of the opera’s prelude.

L‘ âge d’or was commissioned by Síntesis to be presented live for the premiere of the most recent restoration of the film made by the Filmothèque de France during the tenth edition of UNAM’s International Film Festival, FICUNAM.
